A systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by Abdallah et al. showed that while an interscalene block (ISB) provides effective analgesia in the immediate postoperative period, it’s long term effects may not be so desirable.  A great read for preoperative discussions of the the risk-benefit of an ISB for the patient having shoulder surgery.
