Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) in the Assessment of Pleural Effusion

Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) can be a valuable tool during the management of patients in the perioperative period. When a patient presents with signs and symptoms suspicious for pathology, POCUS can determine whether consultation by a specialist is needed. In the video below, normal pleura in the left lung base (LLL) is identified by 1) tissue sliding, 2) A lines, and 3) B lines. Note the difference in the right lung base (RLL) where fluid has separated the pleura from the chest wall.
