VAULT- Regional Anesthesia + Vascular Access Training

Christian R. Falyar, DNAP, CRNA is a staff anesthetist at Great River Health Systems, in Burlington, IA. It is a regional medical center serving a community of approximately 100,000 from southeast Iowa, northeast Missouri and western Illinois.  He serves as adjunct faculty for the Department of Nurse Anesthesia at the University of Iowa and Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia’s Acute Pain Fellowship. Christian lectures throughout the year at local, regional, and national meetings on ultrasound-related anesthesia topics. Since 2014, he has coordinated the open ultrasound-scanning lab at the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) annual congress. He has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals, including the AANA Journal, Journal of Clinical Ultrasound, Current Reviews for Nurse Anesthetists, and the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing.

Before moving to Iowa, Christian was an Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where he coordinated the regional anesthesia program from 2013-2015, teaching didactic lectures and hands-on labs related to ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia and vascular access.  Prior to his full-time faculty appointment, Christian served as affiliate faculty and on-site student clinical coordinator for VCU and Georgetown University.  He created VAULT in 2011 to provide a forum where CRNAs can discuss and network about the latest trends in ultrasound-guided anesthesia procedures.

In 2009, Christian retired from the Air National Guard (ANG) after twenty-one years of service and attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  For the final five years of his career, he served as the Chief Nurse of the 192nd Fighter Wing, and was the senior ranking nurse in the Virginia ANG.

Christian received his Associate of Science in Nursing from Shenandoah University in 1991 and his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Virginia University in 1995.  His first experience with diagnostic ultrasound came in 1998 while working as a nurse in the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit at VCU, performing transcranial Doppler ultrasound on patients suffering from subarachnoid hemorrhage.  Christian also worked as a board certified vascular technologist, performing thousands of diagnostic ultrasound examinations for the Department of Vascular Surgery at VCU.

A graduate of the VCU nurse anesthesia program in 2009, Christian received the Faculty Research Award for his work in ultrasound physics, and was runner-up at the VCU Graduate Student Association’s 12th Annual Research Symposium & Exhibit, for his project entitled “Role of Ultrasound in Regional Anesthesia”.  In 2010, he received his Doctorate in Nurse Anesthesia Practice from VCU, and received the AANA Foundation Program Director’s Award for Outstanding Research in Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia.  In 2014, Christian received a post-doctoral fellowship award from the AANA Foundation for his research evaluating the effects of general anesthesia on regional blood flow to the brachial artery in the cubital fossa.

His research interests are focused ultrasound applications that practitioners can utilize in everyday practice.
